Turn Your Business Ideas Into Action
Starting a company today is easier than ever before. Resources are plentiful, accelerators and incubators are everywhere and technology has brought access and reach right to our fingertips.
However many people today are chatting about great business ideas over coffee vs. putting those great ideas into action. I have to admit though; I was one of those people. I did spend an awful amount of time talking through my product vs. putting action behind it. I mulled over different revenue models, launch strategies and everything in between. And over the past few months I have come across a few key resources that have really changed my perspective on “pressing start” behind my venture. I have become more action oriented and began to see the value of actually taking steps forward vs. talking about taking steps forward.
What has caused this mindset shift? I have to admit that it was not an epiphany but more so constant networking and research around others who are in my shoes and doing the things I am doing. Not to bore you with all the information, over the past few months I have come across two key resources that I think every entrepreneur, visionary, and business professional should tap into.
Poke the Box by Seth Godin
This is a short book by the award-winning author Seth Godin about taking action. He encourages readers to stop waiting for the road map and to start drawing one. It’s founded on the notion of “starting something” but more importantly learning from change. Risk is great, failure is even better if you only learn and improve the next time around. Having read this book – I think the key thing not to forget is that while taking risks and possibility failing, make sure you are not failing at a scale that you can’t get back up.

The Art of Start Video by Guy Kawasaki
If you have 39 minutes and 47 seconds, please spend the time watching this clip! As a fellow entrepreneur, friend, blogger or WLU Alumni – trust me, it will be time well spent. It is inspiring, highly entertaining and will give a reference to no matter where you are in your venture creation process. But I know, in this day and age we are all so very busy and 39 minutes and 47 seconds is a lot to ask for so I am going to summarize the key nuggets in hopes that it will intrigue you to watch the whole clip:
- Make sure your company is “making meaning” right off the start vs. “making money”
- Make a Mantra for your organization not a mission statement. Short, simple, concise and to the point.
- Get going and make sure you Think Different, Polarize People, and Find soul mates.
Curious about it all means? Sit back and enjoy:
I hope that you can find the time to tap into these resources that have been instrumental in helping me “press start”. Everyone is at a different stage in their venture creation process and is coming up against different challenges. But the one thing that everyone has in common is the need to take action in order to overcome all of those obstacles. I’ll leave you with one of my favourite quotes that is also very relevant to the topic of “starting”:
“Have a bias toward action – let’s see something happen now. You can break that big plan into small steps and take the first step right away” – Indira Gandhi
