This event season, we are launching a new spin on our “Techworking Breakfasts”. We are proud to present Communitech’s Waterloo Region UpStart Breakfast Series, featuring three Waterloo Region tech companies stories of their successes and startup.

Ben Bittrolff, Cyborg Trading

Ben is responsible for driving corporate strategy and finance. He has over ten years of experience in the financial markets as a proprietary equities and derivatives trader at Refco Trading Services and CFT Financials.

He also has extensive experience in portfolio management. As Trader Manager at CFT Financials, Ben oversaw the day-to-day operations, including risk management of over twenty derivatives traders. Ben has a B.A. Economics and an M.B.A. with a concentration in finance.

The company develops automated trading technology for financial firms, including hedge funds, brokers, banks, exchanges and professional traders. Our technology streamlines the development and implementation of complex algorithmic strategies, enabling clients to fully leverage their competitive edge.

The company was incorporated in 2008 by James McInnes, Peter Metford and Ben Bittrolff, as we recognized the need for financial market participants to embrace the rapid shift towards automation. We combined our extensive trading experience with our technology backgrounds in order to create a framework for the rapid automation ofcustom, latency sensitive trading strategies.

Doug Blakey, WatSec

Doug Blakey has spent more than 25 years in the IT industry working for organizations such as IBM and Prudential Assurance. During his 8 year tenure with IBM he supported large financial organizations including Fortune 500 companies from  the Canadian banking and insurance industries. During his 4 years at Prudential he completed the FLMI designation from LOMA. He co-founded WatSec in 2009 to address the growing need for affordable enterprise cyber risk management required by many small to mid-sized organizations. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics with a Computer Science major  from the University of Waterloo, and resides in Waterloo, Ontario with his lovely wife Claudia.

WatSec’s fresh approach to addressing cyber risk is transforming the traditional hit-and-miss vulnerability assessment into a complete, affordable, and ongoing cyber risk management program suitable for any organization.

WatSec’s TUF (The Ultimate Firewall™) program offers a practical approach to significantly reducing the risk of losing control over any or all information under the organization’s custody. This is accomplished through workforce education on safe data handling practices, the systematic highlighting of critical security exposures, and completion of a gap analysis versus the current security policy. As a result employees are well versed in the why and the how for effective protection of corporate digital assets, there are significantly fewer security exposures, and more comprehensive insurance liability protection becomes available at lower cost.

Andrew Matlock, Industry Corporation

Andrew Matlock grew up wanting to produce every kind of entertainment. He attended the Norwich University College of the Arts for his BA in Games Art & Design, and went on to co-found Industry Corporation. His personal and professional time is spent producing and directing, writing, drawing, 3D modeling, composing, audio engineering, and helping to bring the wildest imaginations, funniest ideas, and coolest experiences to life.

Industry emerged in the summer of 2011 as a media umbrella with operations in video games, music, branding, and client services. The company is proud to deliver on any creative or technical dream, internal or external. In 2012, Industry’s fledgling family has produced or ported 28 games, worked on several high-profile client projects including websites and networks, administers a robust music and talent catalogue, and established production partnerships with film studios and professional athletes. Highest of all accolades, Industry is a key partner in a new generation of touchscreen consoles, being deployed to restaurants and commercial locations all over the world in 2013.
